I always have to go back to the beginning when it comes to food, health, and wellness…
Most of us all know the famous passage in Genesis 1:1 that says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”. It then goes on to say in Genesis 1:11 “ Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.” v12 “And it was good”
The account of creation goes on to tell about how God then made the waters and oceans team with living creatures and next He goes on to make land animals and man in His own image.
And then comes in our God-given food, “ Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” Gen 1:30
The paradise doesn’t stay this way for long. We all know what happens. Adam and Eve are deceived by Satan and instead of seeing God’s asking of not touching the tree of the knowledge of good and evil as His protection they see it was pleasing to the eye for gaining wisdom, “ When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” Genesis 3:6
So, with this fall it brought brokenness to us all. Instead of having perfect health, perfect intimacy with God etc. it brought death, brokenness disease and destruction.
Genesis 3:17-19 “Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”
After the fall Adam and Eve both realized they were naked and then the first death and sacrificial animal was made. Blood was spilled out on their behalf to cover them. “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” Genesis 3:21
The Hope
Because of this, the moment we are born, we begin to die. This does not leave us without hope. Because of this, God sent his son Jesus to take our place and to give us life and to give it abundantly. John 10:10.
Did you hear that…He came so that despite the death that sin has brought, through Jesus we can have abundant life!
We don’t have control over what day we will die because our days are in God’s control and have already been determined. (Job 14:5) Because of this, we can live our lives freely and with intention to the glory of God with the days that are given.
So, with this fall it brought brokenness to us all. Instead of having perfect health, perfect intimacy with God, etc. it brought death, brokenness disease and destruction.
The bible gives us so much direction for life. When going through and applying principles for healthy living, I personally live it through the lens of scripture.
The Bible’s Answers For:
For sickness: “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them to anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.” James 5:14
For anxiety: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Need for restoration: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
Need for grace when healing doesn’t come fast enough: After Paul asked God to take away the thorn in his flesh, God said to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
Our Personal Health Journey
Looking back over our own personal health journey I can see very clearly where God provided the answers we were needing. As much as I hated seeing my son suffer so much and not having the answers at times, I can now see the reason why. God had a bigger purpose and plan. Through those struggles, it changed my mindset on health and healing and abundant living. The medical community had no answers for us on how to get him well. It was a process of relying on the grace of Jesus and asking Him for wisdom. (James 1:5) Through the naturopathic doctor we were seeing, that wisdom came. We saw that as we used what God already provided for us in nature to give him what his body needed, he healed.
I was shocked at how changing our lifestyle or bringing in certain herbs or nutrients worked! Simple things like taking inflammatory foods out of our diet or how a simple amino acid (protein) can quickly easy anxiety or a bad mood. (Protein is a precursor of neurotransmitters. I just had to add that in because I still get so passionate about things that can be so simple but so helpful) I fell in love with natural medicine. I fell in love with learning how God created our bodies. I fell in love with putting some of the missing pieces together in getting it what it needs to feel good and heal.
While I am definitely thankful for modern medicine in crisis situations it is very lacking when it comes to prevention and chronic health conditions. One can’t help but wonder how much Big Pharma is involved with the chronic health state of our country. Unfortunately, there is evil in the world and there are those who are willing to put dollars in front of people.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. My hope is to help educate and give resources so that each person may continue to improve in all areas of life: Body, Mind, and Spirit. May each one of you have life, and have it abundantly.
